Tinges of Brown

Happy about it or not, today is Valentine's Day! Many people have written about what the holiday could be or should be, but today I write to tell you about the change God has brought about in my heart. I guess it's my personal valentine's gift from the Father.

My story starts several years ago when I was in the midst of many "firsts" that a love relationship can bring. I remember a conversation with my family - about flowers. I selfishly declared that I preferred an elegant bouquet delivered to my door straight from an uppity florist shop in town, as opposed to a pack of haphazardly assembled stems from a local grocery or department store. In my mind, high quality gifts were a display of soaring affection.

Today, on a snowy Valentine's Day, I received a bouquet of roses from my dear husband. My heart is overflowing with gratitude, and I keep smiling when I look at them. They weren't delivered to my door by some fancy florist. They didn't come in swirly wrapping with a dreamy bow attached. They were, in fact, picked out by yours truly at............... wait for it.................. Aldi! These pink roses [I chose the color :)] looked like they had been mishandled, possibly squashed too tightly with other flowers, had tinges of brown on the edges of the petals, and had probably been sitting in that grocery store for a day too long. And yet, the sentiment meant just as much as if I had received them from SomeFancyPlaceUpTown. I might have even received a little extra joy, because I got to arrange them myself! :)

What had changed? It was NOT simply the fact that we have been married almost 3 years. Because, trust me, I don't believe that as the anniversary number rises, the quality of appreciative sentiments deserves to decline. It's that I was seeing those roses through different lenses.

You see, it's been a difficult winter financially. Steady, good paying jobs seem hard to come by out here right now. Dustin is down to a couple days of work per week, at an income lower than we were used to in Lancaster. After several months of that, your perspective begins to change. I find myself so aware of needs around me. My heart stings when I see a child with matted hair and a too small, too thin jacket on a subzero winter day. I ache with the man in line behind me buying only a pack of hotdogs and bread, looking longingly at the foods I throw on the belt. Where were these people when our bank account had a bit more cushion? I simply didn't see them.

The "tinges of brown" in our lives, are enough to increase our gratefulness significantly. I'm embarrassed it took such drastic measures to get my attention. God has a plan. From the world's point of view, they would think we've made decisions that are slightly crazy - leaving behind the promise of good paying jobs, etc. to move into unfamiliar territory. But we look at it through God's eyes. We know He has a reason for calling us to this place at this time. For now, we trust. Lest you think I'm being lofty and pious, it's more like gritting our teeth, squeezing shut our eyes, and hanging on for dear life! :)

So, even though Valentine's day is over, go BLESS someone! Speak life! Spark a smile! You may think what you have to offer is less than best, but your tinges of brown may be just what someone else needs. You don't have to have a lover to enjoy Valentine's day. Just find someone you love, and spread a little joy.

*Small side note: (I never would have thought I'd say this) but I think the most romantic thing he did for me was help me clean the house in preparation for Sunday lunch guests!! :) Now we ARE an old married couple. :)

project sign painting

Here are a few sign projects I've been working on. Most of these were painted on wood "scraps" I rescued from the campfire minutes before my Dad hurled them on! While I sputteringly tried to swallow my coffee, he did manage to waste a few on the fire before I could tell him to stop. :)

mantel...

bathroom...

front door...

one for the library at church...

and one as a gift for Kara, my niece...

Trust me, these are FAR from perfection! I'm still learning. And having lots of fun in the process! :)
I'm hoping to find a good wood supplier locally. I keep scouting the countryside for old barns. Would love to attempt some larger-sized projects.

It's a snowy day here... perfect for painting!

Revival... of the blog

Hello! I've returned. This poor little blog has been neglected for so long, but I think it's time to bring it back to life. It's a cozy, lazy Saturday... perfect for reflecting, ponderings, and remembrances. Perfect for catching up on our lives. Perhaps we'll need to take it in slow increments so that this post isn't overwhelmingly long. Our first year in Westmoreland County is behind us. It's been a bit of a blur in some ways - mostly due to the fact that I was teaching full time, adjusting to a new community and church family, AND fixing up a house in the process! It's a year I wouldn't want to repeat, but we surely made a lot of memories. Life began taking on a bit of "normalcy" this summer... so that's where this documenting process begins. SUMMER 2013 included: I was trying to garden on my own for the very first time, and it was a discouraging battle against the deer. They destroyed everything in sight, even with all the little deterrent tricks we tried.
We have since decided that perhaps square foot gardening is the answer to a few of our problems. I got a beautiful crop of green beans, and my strawberries look like they will survive till spring. Are you familiar with this way of gardening?
Throughout the summer we made various improvements to the house, the largest of which was replacing the shingles on the roof. We were extremely grateful for the men who came to help. Of course, we had to pick one of the warmest Saturdays. :(
We enjoyed spending a weekend at Raystown Lake with Dustin's family, and Cameron. Our cabins...
View from our front porch
Boating was the highlight of the weekend!
The summer included various other trips, projects, and events. Somehow, they just failed to get documented. :( And before we knew it... we were back in school!
This year I am a part-time assistant, and music teacher. I'm enjoying having more time at home work on projects. Projects that will soon be posted! Stay tuned!! And happy Saturday. :)

A lovely day for me...

*Went to Rosemary's to pick up something, and spent an hour chatting and drinking iced coffee! I'm thinking about making it a Friday morning tradition! :)

*Spent the afternoon making these cinnamon rolls! The smells brought back memories of living at home, and watching the expert, My Mom, make them over and over again. I bravely decided to attempt them, and was pleasantly pleased with how they turned out, considering it was my first time and all. Show up at our garage sale next weekend, and you just might be able to buy some! (If I get the urge to make more next week) =)

*A gorgeous afternoon rain, which we so badly need. And which also makes everything seem more cozy somehow.

Hope your Friday has been enjoyable as well!

My morning isn't starting out so great. First I pulled on a blind to pop it up and the whole thing came crashing down on me! I tried valiantly to roll it back up and stick both ends carefully in their slots, but then it just unrolled. I decided I had had enough and that Hubs could fix it when he got home. Well as I went to lay it on the floor it knocked over my beautiful tall vase from my friend Carla, and smashed it to pieces on the stone fireplace. Grrr. The glass is still laying there because I'm taking time to mourn the loss. To go back to bed or not...... I didn't. Instead I made a cup of my favorite Main Street coffee, and wasted time on the computer. I should start cleaning and organizing, but my motivation fell with the blind.

It's July 4th weekend! We should be doing something!! We are struggling to come up with anything creative, cheap, and easy. I guess we'll consider our house a vacation home, and enjoy the schedule of leisure. A welcome break after a crazy week! And the only free weekend we have for a month.

Wedding pictures to be posted shortly! (once the urge strikes =])

Glorious weekend to all!

What a cuh-razy week! Seems like busyness is hitting us in full swing. We had people at our house Friday eve, Sunday eve, Monday eve, Wednesday eve, and this evening my family comes for the weekend! Monday and Wednesday evenings were nights of hosting dear friends, and serving them supper as well. I've been discovering in the last several years, that I really enjoy hosting people! When I lived at home I thought it was just more of a bother, because it always meant more work for everyone. But I'm grateful for the amazing example Mom & Dad set for us, at being hospitable hosts. I believe it definitely is an art! One in which my skills need lots of developing. Dustin and I are excited about learning that together. So......... come on over!! :)

Yea, so my family is coming this weekend! Woot-woot! It's one of those times where we'll be camping out on air mattresses and floor nests, since space at our house is limited. The only thing missing will be Kendall's family, sadly. But in spite of that we still plan to have a great time having picnics with extended family, attending Curtis & Kelly's wedding, and lots of general merriment and laughter! Dad always brings plenty of lame jokes to keep us going, and with 5 kiddos, how could it ever be dull!?!

So I'm out for the weekend! Lovely times ahead to all...
Cheers!

TGIF

Well, this is me… sticking my neck out and starting a blog. I say “sticking my neck out” for various reasons, but I’ll keep those thoughts to myself for now.

The most exciting event of today was that we now have internet at our new little house!! Woot woot! It’s sad that I will no longer be winning the medal for “Most Skilled in Finding Local Hot Spots.” On the other hand, relinquishing that title is quite easy in exchange for surfing in the comfort of my own home. So I thought I would celebrate by posting! :)

Casting doom over my day loomed the fact that I needed to make the dreaded trip to the License Branch Center. You hear all these stories from everyone who make it sound so terrible! And you think, “It can’t be THAT bad can it?” I thought I would be on the up and up, going prepared! I would not be making thirty-eleven trips like others have done. So I researched branch locations to find the nearest one, researched hours of operation, researched documents and papers I needed to have along.

My first tip that I was not going to be successful was when I drove and drove and drove. 12 miles! Are you kidding me? It ended up being closer to 25. Not to be disheartened I shook it off, grabbed my documents, and strode proudly in the door. People, people, people everywhere. Lines of people. And did you ever notice that the majority of License Branch “waitees” look like they should be home picking cat hair off their furniture?

Of course the snappy lady at the front desk asked what I needed, then commenced to rattle off a list of documents I needed to have along, only one of which I actually had. I tried to inform her that my research said otherwise, but she was already throwing a piece of paper at me stating that I should have just packed up my entire 5-drawer filing cabinet and hauled it with me. Just like that she was off to help the next customer, leaving me to walk out the door muttering, “Fine! I’ll keep my Indiana driver’s license, which is my preference anyways!”

I spotted a Goodwill across the street, stopped and got 3 amazing kid’s books for a total of $1.50. I felt a little happier after that.

I think I’ll sweet talk Dustin into going with me next time. Did you ever notice how things are better when they’re along? :)

Lovely FRIDAY to all!!
